Policies For Participation - Reminder

Policies For Participation
WRHS – Performing Arts

Parents – please read the following and go over the policies with your children:

Homeschooling is awesome!  I love having the freedom to instill my values in my children, and decide how, what and when to teach them.  I love being able to work around their individual dispositions and provide a learning environment suited to them.  And, I love that my children can be part of the homeschool play with so many other great kids.

However, even though we are a group of homeschoolers and we do our best to provide a pleasant and enjoyable experience for each child, we need you to understand that rehearsals and performances do not take place in your home.  For the last few years, there have been over 50 children of various ages in each play.  A structured environment is necessary to maintain order.  We need you to understand this and help us enforce rules for rehearsals and performances.

Each student in the play is expected to know his/her lines for the scenes they’ll be in at each rehearsal.  Parents, please go over the schedule each week so your child knows which scenes he/she will be in.  When possible, help them learn their lines.

Each student is expected to be quiet and respectful during their down time at rehearsal.  They may play games or read quietly, but running around either inside or outside, or being otherwise disruptive, is not allowed.

Each student is expected to dress appropriately for rehearsals.  This includes, but is not limited to: no hats or caps for either boys or girls, modest attire (no cleavage or underwear showing) and no shirts advertising substances which are illegal for minors to purchase.  The directors reserve the right to determine when an item of apparel is inappropriate or offensive.

Instead of monthly treats and the point system, we are going to use a different incentive program this year.  After the first performance, each student will receive a ticket they can redeem for either one box of candy, one flower or one balloon – unless that student is on probation.

Probation means that a student has accumulated at least 5 demerits.  Some of the ways demerits will be handed out include:

Tardiness – 1 each occurrence (more if extreme)
Unprepared for Rehearsal – 1 each occurrence
Disruptive Behavior in Rehearsal – 1 each occurrence (more if extreme)
Disrespectful Behavior to Fellow Student – 1 each occurrence (more if extreme)
Disrespectful Behavior to Adult – 2 each occurrence (more if extreme)
Disruptive Behavior During a Performance – 2 each occurrence (more if extreme)

Directors reserve the right to award demerits for behavior not listed.
Directors may also determine that a student is on probation based on their behavior during last year’s performance.  (If that is the case, parents will be informed before the first rehearsal)

A student who is on probation with 5-9 demerits, will receive a treat ticket after the final performance.
A student with 10 or more demerits will not receive a ticket.

Directors reserve the right to require parents to sit backstage with their child during a performance if the child is too unruly.

The use of cellphones or ipods (or similar devices) will not be allowed during rehearsals, even during down time.   First offense – the device will be confiscated and the student can pick it up after rehearsal.  Second offense – the device will be confiscated and a parent will need to pick it up after rehearsal.  Third or more offense – confiscation and directors will determine appropriate punishment.  (We understand that their may be circumstances when a student will need to make a call during rehearsal, or use an electronic device as a camera.  Please speak with a director first.)

Guests are allowed at rehearsals.  However, guests are not permitted to wander around the church or the theater during rehearsals.  It is too disruptive to the performers, and it is not respectful to the people who are generously allowing us to use their facilities.

Furthermore, no guests are allowed backstage during a performance.

In extreme cases, the directors may pull a student out of the play if their behavior and/or attitude is too disruptive.   We don’t anticipate that this will happen, but we want to be clear from the start that no individual’s performance is more important than the show as a whole.

We’re really not anticipating that many behavioral problems.  We just want to be prepared and try to be as clear as possible about the rules from the start.  This is a great bunch of kids, and we’re anticipating a super year!

More Pictures and a Video

The following pictures and video are from yesterday's rehearsal.  I (Mrs. Green) don't have the entire "Don't Say No" choreography in the video because I went to work with the G-men on "Spies" before Lindsey had finished teaching the whole song.  Mrs. Stuewer might have the rest of it though.

This is quite a cast!  Sorry my camera didn't get everyone!
Some moms and littles hanging out...

Again, I'm sorry I didn't get everyone with my camera, but this is a good refresher of what Lindsey taught us for "Don't Say No to the USO".  I think you all did a great job for just learning all of these moves!

 Harmony Brothers Practicing

 Scenes 10 & 11
 Female Gov't Agents
 Scene 8
 G-Men
 Tiny Tappers

Oh so silly....

These were all taken at the December 8th rehearsal.

Silence is Golden

Great work on the dancing yesterday!  And Lindsey, stellar job!  You make me (Mrs. Green) want to be on stage instead of behind the scenes.  = )

Everyone, please remember to practice your choreography a little bit every day.  If you don't, you'll totally forget your steps by next Thursday.  Practicing a little bit every day is better than waiting for a big block of time to come (which never seems to happen--at least at my house).

According to Mrs. Stuewer, the points system will be in full swing next week.  Now, don't make us be the bad guys.  Shushing you is not fun for us (it makes us feel like nags), and we won't like giving points either.  Here are some ideas to help you stay quiet while you're waiting for your scenes.

  • Bring some school work or reading material.
  • Bring a quiet, non-messy craft.  (Knitting or crocheting comes to mind.  A construction project?  Glue and glitter?  Not-so-much.  You get the idea.)
  • Mentally work on lines and lyrics for upcoming scenes.
  • Learn sign language so you can "talk" to your friends silently.  ; )
  • Write a letter or draw a picture for your grandma.
  • Ask me to work with you on any song notes which are giving you trouble.  I'll keep my little keyboard in the 4's & 5' Room after warm-ups, so if I'm not busy working on a scene in the main room, I'd be happy to help you learn your notes.
  • Remember that being quiet while others are rehearsing/directing shows love and respect to them.  Being loud displays selfishness (or forgetfulness) and disrespect.  I know that sounds a little harsh, and I'm sorry, but we can all benefit from remembering the Golden Rule here: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  (I'm talking to us moms, too--including myself.  It'd be pretty embarrassing if I had to give myself points.)

That being said, I do love watching how well everyone gets along with one another.  If anyone ever had any doubts about homeschoolers being socialized, all they'd have to do is attend one of our rehearsals.  = )

Now, go practice your dance steps.

Low & Middle Parts

For the low (tenor) part on "Together We Must Stand":

 G      G       A       D           D     F#      G
We   are   the   land----   of    the   free-----!

__________________________________________________________

For the low (tenor) part on "Don't Say No to the USO":

 B        C#      D       D    C#  C#  A
And   the   good   ol'    U    S    O !

Some of you young men may want to sing an octave below what everyone else is doing.  That "D" gets pretty high.
__________________________________________________________

For the middle (alto) part on "Together We Must Stand":

 G     G      A    G           G    A      B
We  are  the  land---  of   the   free----!

The "G" which you sing on the word "of" might be the trickiest.  The sopranos (high part) are singing an "A" there, which is the next note up.  If you simply remember to stay on the same note from "land", then you'll get it.  Easy-peasy, right?  ; )
__________________________________________________________

For the middle (alto) part on "Don't Say No to the USO":

  B      C#     D      D   C#  C#  C#
And  the  good  ol'   U    S   O !

This one's not too tough.  Just stay on the same note at the end there.
__________________________________________________________

Now, you might be looking at those letters and thinking, "Uhhh...that means absolutely nothing to me."  Well, never fear!  I'm going to do something special for you.  I'll make some videos of these lines of music so you can watch them right here and sing along.  I'm not the most technologically savvy person in the world, so it might take me a day or two to figure it out, but I shall do my best!

(I hope you sopranos aren't feeling left out in this post, but I feel like your part is pretty easy to hear on the CD.)

Instrumental CD, Part Preferences

Hi Everyone!  Mrs. Green here.

If you haven't started practicing with the Instrumental CD yet, then start.

If you have a preference for Chorus 1 or Chorus 2 in "Together We Must Stand", I need to know that TODAY (Wednesday).  If you prefer the low, middle, or high notes (or very high note) in the last phrase, please tell me that too.

If you have trouble posting directly on the blog here, then you can tell me on the Facebook page (Wolf River Homeschooler--Performing Arts), or email me at Jen@ngyc.org.

If I don't hear from you, then I'll assume you have no preference.  If you've already told me, then you don't need to tell me again.  Thanks for your responses.  = )

See you tomorrow!  I've missed you all!
