Getting Into Your Character!

Cheryl had a great comment in another post.  I'm pulling it up here, so more people might read it:

" I just learned this in Oct, actors get Into their roles by making a list ALL about their character, what is their favorite color, food, fun thing to do. What family members do u have? Where r u from? etc... Not you of course, your character, who is someone completely different from you. Try it!"

Great idea!  Start on your list now, and plan on a quiz on April 12!

Moms To Do List For April 5 Rehearsal

Okay Moms, we're ready to put you to work at rehearsals:

1)  We need 2-3 moms to be in the wings with their scripts, keeping up with the show and helping the kids to know we're we are and when to go on.  If possible, I'd like these moms to be part of the group assigned to be backstage helpers (Boughton, Bartz, Braun, Kersten, Pam Holbrook, Jamie Holbrook) to help you get the experience before the performances.

2) We need moms/other family members to do some ironing (material for bandstand and tablecloths).  If you can help, please bring along irons and ironing boards.

3) We need moms/other family members to paint a large sign for the USO.  If you're interested, please dress accordingly.

4) If there's anyone available after the above needs are filled, we could use someone to sit with the Tiny Tappers.

5)  Abby H., if you're going to be at rehearsal we could use you to work with the Harmony Brothers during their downtime.  If Abby's not around and the above needs are filled, we could use someone to work with the Harmony Brothers on their song.

6) If anyone's available after all of the above needs are filled, we could use someone to work with the Tiny Tappers on their dance.

I will have a list posted at rehearsal as well.   It may be updated from this one if I think of other areas of need

Notes From March 29 Rehearsal

I just want to get a few things down while they're still on my mind.  I'm not going to write down all of the notes we were going through at the end.  Hopefully everyone was paying attention.

I noticed a water spill in the curtain area backstage.  That could be a hazard for people getting on and off. Let's try to keep water bottles only in the prop and dressing rooms, and on the floor in front of the stage - not on the stage and not in anyone's traffic area.

If you have a trench coat, put your name inside on a piece of masking tape so we can keep track of whose is whose.

I'm going to make an executive decision on Sable Island.  I tried googling it but didn't find much.  It is taken from the French word for sand, and I think that is pronounced SAH bleh.  However, given that fact that none of the websites I found on the island mentioned how to pronounce it, we'll go with the standard pronunciation (rhymes with cable).  I'm guessing if they were too concerned about it being pronounced differently they would have made a point of its pronunciation.  If anyone is interested, Sable Island is famous for its wild horses.  You can get more information at this website:  http://www.greenhorsesociety.com/default.htm

Next week, we'll go over Don't Say No... once or twice, then Jitterbug Saturday Night.  Then, we're going to run through the entire play.  Remember - we're not going to do all of the stopping and starting like we've been doing.  Read through all of your scenes.  Know your lines and your cues!!!!!

Extra practices are scheduled for April 17 and April 24!

Cheryl had a great idea a couple of weeks ago about setting up a table in the hallway to honor veterans from our WRHS families.  I keep forgetting to have her bring it up at rehearsals.  So Cheryl, if you're reading this, please talk about it next week.  If you're not Cheryl, please remind me about it next week.

Preparing for Act 2

Here are links to everything you'll need for the music in Act 2.  Just click on each title, and you'll be magically whisked away to the blog post containing that song.  = )

Slap That Jukebox Vocal Videos
Remember, we need some male vocal help on this song.  Nick, Raphael, Henry, Coulter, Evan, David, Alex, & Michael--please be ready to sing from the wings on this song.  You may use your scripts this week, but I don't know how much light you'll have back there come the performances, so learn the words by heart over the next couple of weeks.  Thank you!

Hey America Vocal Video (with adjusted rhythms)

Hey America Choreography

For the Finale (Don't Say No to the USO), remember that we're changing the words to go along with the choreography everyone knows from Act 1.  The verse we're singing for this Finale is:
Don't say no to the USO
Every soldier's home away from home
Don't say no to the USO
They'll entertain you everywhere you roam
In every nation, on land or sea
They bring a big, warm welcome from the land of the free.
So give a cheer for every GI Joe
And the good ol' USO!
Don't Say No Choreography  (Watch from 0:45 to 1:17)
Then, there are the five theme songs for the different military branches.
Then, we sing America the Beautiful with the audience.
America the Beautiful Harmony Part
Then we hum America the Beautiful a couple of times (or so).
Finally, we sing Battle Hymn of the Republic

If you have any questions, please ask!
~ Mrs. Green

P.S.  DOOR 19!!!!!  = )

Hey America Video

Hi Gang!

Go ahead and grab the handout I gave you last Thursday (check your folder if you don't know what I'm talking about) and sing along while you watch the following video.  I fixed a mistake at the bottom of the first side of the page, but I found another one.  (Grrrr.)  Near the top of the second side it should say, "Here's to the GALS who sent those girdles...."  This only affects the ladies, of course.

I'm saying, "One...three...one...three..." at the beginning of the song because that's when you're supposed to snap.  In the video in this post I was encouraging you to snap on "...two...four...two...four".  I had that wrong.  Still watch that video for the rest of the choreography, though.

Videos from Act 1

Part of Scene 14

Rat-a-tat-tat that rivet!

"Spies"

Kitty's Dance

"Together We Must Stand"

Notes From March 22 Rehearsal

Remember, we'll be moving the tables and bandstand forward (we may have to push the tables back when we close the curtain)

Scene 5 - Hostesses will line up on the bandstand first, and come forward as you are introduced.  Taylor Sisters not so far forward
Scene 6 - Tiny Tappers and Harmony Brothers will do their routines on the bandstand

Everyone needs to work on volume in your lines and for your songs!

Kilroy Was Here dance - Background people - by the time the music starts, be in your cluster and freeze

We'll be moving Edna to a front table, and make sure she has someone sitting with her in each scene.

Scene 14 - Edna & girls will be in the front table, boys will go to the back table

NO PEEKING from behind the curtains.

During dances, especially when marching in Don't Say No..., try to have a light touch to keep your shoes from being too noisy.

Everyone - Don't turn your back to the audience.  Remember, there are people in the audience on the side as well.  They don't want to see your backside.

Taylor Sisters - Don't stand when you say 'What!' to the g-men.

Scene 13 - start entering right after 'Yahoo!'

During 'Rat-a-tat-tat', we're going to have people entering to watch the performance

In German, 'w' is pronounced 'v' - for example, Stuewer is pronounced Steever.

Scene 19 - Remember, our play takes place only 2 months after Pearl Harbor. Citizens would have been very patriotic and determined at this point in time.  Some of you might remember 9/11 and how patriotic everyone in the country was right after it.  During the course of this song, the characters are reminded that their own problems aren't as important  as the greater cause of everyone uniting to win the war.  You want to evoke that mood in your behavior while you watch and as you sing.

Upcoming Rehearsal Schedule

Next week, March 29, we'll be going over Act 2.  Go over your lines!  Remember Mrs. Kluge's advice from last week to physically walk through the act.  Visualize where everyone is on the stage and where you'll be walking, standing, who'll you'll be near and/or interacting with, etc.

Here's the plan for the remaining rehearsals:

March 29 - Act 2 - run through 2 times (Buddy, Coulter, Evan, Henry, Michael, Alex & David: remember, you need to learn Slap That Jukebox)
April 5 -   Act 1 - go over all of the dances, at least the music for Jitterbug Saturday Night (remember - Buddy, Coulter, Evan, Henry, Michael, Alex and David - you need to learn this song!)
I'd also like to go over Scene 5, Scene 6 and Scene 9 again, - and then run through the entire Act 1.
April 12 - Act 2 dances & trouble spots, and then run through all of Act 2
April 17 - We may schedule a rehearsal for this day
April 19 - Entire Play
April 24* (Tuesday) - Entire Play
April 26 - Dress Rehearsal
April 27 - Performance @ 7pm
April 28 - Performance @ 7pm
April 29 - Performance @ 1pm
May 19 - Cast Party!

Odds and Ends

We took the wrong trench coat home by mistake.  If you ended  up with a comically badly altered trench coat, it's ours. (Really, I've been meaning to work on it some more :) ) Please just let me know in the comments.

Be sure to wear your costumes (except for the Tiny Tappers) to the rehearsals!

Every family will need to pay for some of their own makeup supplies (share within your family).  If you have some left over from last year, you can use it again this year.  We also have some eyeliner and mascara available, $5 for the 2 of them combined.  We'll let you know about what you'll need for lipstick.

So, it's not Door 20.  It's Door 19.  The door should be open by 11:45 (although I'm going to see if we can get in sooner since we'll need to reset up the stage each week), and it's supposed to remain open for the afternoon.

Pictures: March 22nd

I didn't get many pictures today, gang.  I was a bit busy just watching & listening.  I'll get some videos up later tonight for you.  (I think you'll forgive my lack of pictures when you see Nick's chicken scene.)

Oh, don't forget to get your free ads to the Bergmanns by today!

Rules for Practice

A few rules you'll need to know before practice on Thursday:

As a reminder, go around to the back of the building and enter through Door #20.  It will open at 11:45, so don't come before that.

Absolutely NO FOOD will be allowed in the building while we are practicing.  (You may bring in water bottles if you are very careful with them.)

NO ONE is allowed to touch the sound system.

No running around in the auditorium, climbing on the seats, or running around outside.

I know this is going to be very different from the Mielke, but you're a great bunch of kids and I know we'll all be able to adjust.  If we all stay focused on being in 'performance mode' we won't even notice the rules.

We're heading toward the home stretch.  I'm very anxious and excited to see Act One again - it seems like it's been forever since we've done it.  Mrs. Kluge gave some excellent advice on Thursday.  Work on running through the whole act ahead of time.  Clear an area in your home so you can actually walk through where you'll be standing in each scene.  Visualize what action is going on around you.

Remember, our goal is to run through Act One twice on Thursday.  The first time, we'll probably have lots of stopping and starting as we make sure everyone is in position.  The second time, we'll try to run straight through.

And, again, Door #20!

March 22 Early Rehearsal For Hostesses and USO Workers

This is from the comments (from Lindsey) - I'm bumping it up here so it will have a better chance of being read
-CLS

Alrighty, now it's time to get down to business ;) I talked to Mrs. Conto about practicing the beginning of Don't Say No to the U.S.O next week AT THE CHURCH at 11:30 a.m. before heading over to the high school and she said it's a go!

If you are a hostess or U.S.O. worker who dances in the beginning of this song, please be there so we can get it down pat. The High School is within walking distance of the church an I'm pretty sure I'll be walking if anyone wants a strolling buddy when we're done and ready to head to the school.

Please respond to this message by Tuesday so I know you got the info and I don't have to play phone tag all week ;) And if you don't, I just might have to call you or track you down- be forewarned! I already talked to Georgi, Elena and Sloane and I'm pretty sure Maria won't be able to come, so everyone else, will this work for you? Thanks :)

Jitterbug Sat Night (March 15th)

Maria & Elisabeth Demonstrate

Hey America Choreography

Thanks again, Ritters, for such fun choreography!
(Humph, *I* want to be in a musical.  *pouts*)

Over the weekend, I'll type up something that might help us all remember the "cookin' now" (and other) sections.  This song is so tricky with its different rhythms!  Grrrrr....

Pictures: March 15th

Hi Gang!  Great job today!
(I know I always say that, but that's because it's always TRUE.)

Remember, next week we're doing all of Act 1 (Scenes 1-19; Pages 1-34).  You need to know not only your own lines, but also the lines right before your lines.  Like Mrs. Kluge said, practice your lines and staging at home so you can do it almost without thinking.  The directors shouldn't be hearing things like, "Am I in this scene/song?"  We expect you to know now.  You can DO it.  = )

The songs in Act 1 are as follows:

  • Don't Say No to the USO  (Scene 2)
  • Jitterbug Saturday Night  (Scene 4)
  • Kilroy Was Here (Scene 12)
  • Rat-a-tat-tat That Rivet  (Scene 15)
  • Spies  (Scene 17)
  • Together We Must Stand  (Scene 19)
Please look through past blog posts for vocal videos and choreography videos so you can brush up on your weak spots.

Okay, enjoy these pictures whilst I work on the videos.

Didn't Mrs. Conto do a superb job on the Tappers' costumes?

I love our performing arts family!
That circle time was really neat today, Mrs. Stuewer.

Free Ads

Great job selling ads this year. It looks like we will sell more ads than we did last year. We’ll have the final numbers for you in the next couple of weeks as money keeps trickling in. If you have any loose ends out there as far as ads go please tie then up this week.

Parents - If your family sold a full page of ads or more you are given a one-eighth page ad for free. When you make these ads please make them 1 ½” by 2” and landscape setting.  You can look over prior years' programs for ideas.  Please get these to the Bergmann Family by Thursday March 22nd at the latest.

America the Beautiful ~ Harmony

Hi Ladies,

Sorry this took so long for me to get this posted.  I told Mr. Green he could borrow my camera while he's out of town this week, forgetting that I still needed to make this video!  Jeffrey let me use his camera, and we finally figured out how to upload it to my computer.  Whew!

"America the Beautiful" harmony part
played along with the Vocal Demo CD.

Let me know if it'd be helpful to have a video played along with the Instrumental CD, too.  Now that I know how to use Jeffrey's camera, it'll be a piece of cake.  = )

Thanks!
 ~ Mrs. Green

Don't Say No ~ New Video

This is a NEW video for "Don't Say No to the USO".  The end is a bit dizzying.  I was trying to get the four different spins at the cymbal crashes.  (It didn't work too well, but you get the idea.)

Don't forget to re-watch the musical interlude videos I reposted a few posts ago!

Slap That Jukebox Choreography

First of all, a HUGE thanks to Hannah & Abigail for creating such a fun dance!
It's so snappy and spinny and hip-hoppy!  = )

Demo of "Cough up the money"

Demo of the final spin sequence

"Slap That Jukebox" ~ Entire Song

Great job, everyone!  And thanks for doing it a million times!

Ramen Noodles & Battle Hymn Videos

"Ramen Noodles"
Great job, everybody!  Sorry the camera work is so wonky at the beginning.
(And I wish there were less of my voice and more of yours.)

"Battle Hymn of the Republic"
I didn't get it from the beginning.  It starts with the refrain, but I recorded all of verse two.  Here are all of the words:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.

Glory! Glory, hallelujah!
Glory! Glory, hallelujah!
Glory! Glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift my soul to answer Him; be jubilant my feet;
Our God is marching on!  (Do the refrain again.)

Pictures: March 8th

Hey there, swingin' cats!  Enjoy these pictures while I work on the videos!

I know this one's blurry, but I just love Lindsey's face!
"At dawn!"

Sorry about your eyes being closed, Bailey,
but the rest of the shot is so cute!

Don't Say No Interlude Dances

Hi Everyone!

Here's a link so you can quickly find the choreography for the interlude part of "Don't Say No to the USO".  These are not new videos.

Don't Say No to the USO Choreography

Regarding Scene 31, we will be singing parts for "America the Beautiful"; however, they don't sing parts on the Vocal Demonstration CD.  I'm working on writing these out on sheet music, and I hope to have them ready to hand out to you on Thursday.  I'll also make some vocal videos of them over the weekend.  Now, I'm not sure if we'll have much time to practice these parts on Thursday, but I'm not worried about that.  You all are pro's.

Also, keep working on "Battle Hymn" if you're new this year!  (I still need someone to teach the high part to me on the refrain.)

~ Mrs. Green

I Haven't Forgotten About You

I apologize for not getting Slap That Jukebox choreography posted.  I filmed it on my new phone and thought it would be an easy upload to the blog.  Even after speaking with 2 people at Cellcom and putting in a request at their helpline, we still can't figure out why it won't load.  I'm continuing to work on it, but I'm not sure it's going to happen.  (Truth be told, I was actually turning the mute on when I thought I was turning it off, so there's no sound on any of the videos, anyway.  Sigh.)

Just a reminder to get your bios in to Bethany B., and to finish up with any remaining ad sales.

This week we'll be going over Scene 31- the veteran's tribute.  I think when that's done we'll go over Scene 30 some more - that was a complicated one and it could use some more work.  If there's time after that, we'll see about stringing some scenes from Act 2 together.
